US man returns after release from Myanmar
CHICAGO American John Yettaw has returned to the U.S. after being freed from a hard-labor prison sentence for his bizarre visit to the home of Myanmar's detained democracy leader.

Yettaw, who has been ill since his arrest in Myanmar, was in a wheelchair and wearing a surgical mask as he moved through Chicago's O'Hare International Airport Wednesday afternoon. He refused to talk to reporters at the airport.

He's expected to fly on to Springfield, Mo. the last stop on his trip from Bangkok.

Supreme Court Orders Evidentiary Hearing for Death Row Prisoner Troy Anthony Davis; Rare Decision Could Result in New Trial
AMY GOODMAN: Explain the day and the date and what happened.

MARTINA CORREIA: August 19th, 1989, they were downtown playing pool in a pool hall, and when they were downtown playing pool, Sylvester Red Coles got into an argument with a man, Larry Young, a homeless man, over a can of beer. They were arguing and fighting and followed up the street, and somebody yelled into that pool hall and said, I think Red is going to kill this guy over a can of beer.

Troy was nineteen at the time, and Darrell Collins was sixteen. And they followed up the street to go see what was going on. And when they did that, Larry Young was being pistol-whipped in a parking lot. And when he was being pistol-whipped in a parking lot, you know, everybody took off running, but the off-duty police officer came outside to see what was going on. And then he was

AMY GOODMAN: This is Officer MacPhail.

MARTINA CORREIA: Officer MacPhail. And then he was shot. But it was dark parking lot at 1:00 in the morning. And Sylvester Coles didn't even tell the police officers that he had a .38-caliber weapon, the same caliber weapon that the police officer was killed with. And, you know, the next day he went and got a lawyer, one of the highest-paid lawyers in the city, went up to the police department, and then, all of a sudden, the case turned on Troy. And so, Troy never even had a time to defend himself. And when he wanted to answer questions, they didn't want to hear anything he had to say.

And my thing is, Sylvester "Red" Coles was the only felon in the parking lot who admitted that he had a gun. That gun was never found. There was no physical evidence, no DNA, no reason for Troy to even shoot the police officer. So, until he went into the police department, they didn't know who killed the police officer.

AMY GOODMAN: But the witness after witness after witness who said that your brother, Troy, did this?

MARTINA CORREIA: The witnesses were describing Coles as the person at first. And then, when he came in, they were changing it, and they were saying they heard pop, pop, pop. They heard shots. And, you know, then they gave all these different descriptions of Troy, you know. And, you know, Coles himself said he never really saw Troy shoot the police officer, that, you know, the police officer ran past him, and then he heard the shots.

So they used witnesses who were on parole and probation and who had criminal records, who were teenagers, interrogated without lawyers for hours. And some of these people signed statements that they couldn't even read and write, that they didn't even know what they signed. They just wanted to get out of there. And they implicated Troy on paper unknowingly. So then, when they went into court, they were told, "If you change your testimony, we'll charge you with perjury, accessory to murder." And so, they stuck to their statements.

(FLASHBACK) HPV Vaccine Hoax Exposed: FDA Documents Reveal HPV "Not Associated with Cervical Cancer"
A NaturalNews investigation has revealed that the FDA knew as early as 2003 that Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) was not linked to cervical cancer. Despite this knowledge, the FDA, along with key pharmaceutical companies, has continued to push for the use of HPV vaccinations as a defense against cervical cancer, even when its own research showed no link exists.

Today, NaturalNews publishes, "The Great HPV Vaccine Hoax Exposed," a special report that cites from numerous FDA documents and clinical studies to show that HPV vaccines are not only ineffective, they may actually be dangerous! As revealed in the special report, the Gardasil vaccine has been linked to a 44.6% increase in precancerous lesions in some women, raising serious doubts over the sensibility of mandatory vaccination policies.

(FLASHBACK) Judicial Watch Uncovers New FDA Records Detailing Ten New Deaths & 140 "Serious" Adverse Events Related to Gardasil; Watchdog Publishes New Special Report Examining 8,864 Adverse Event Reports Detailing Safety Concerns
Judicial Watch had previously obtained 3,461 reports relating to Gardasil. On June 10, 2008, Judicial Watch received a compact disk from the FDA with a new total of 8,864 Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) records. These documents and the new Judicial Watch report, entitled "Examining the FDA's HPV Vaccine Records: Detailing the Approval Process, Side-Effects, Safety Concerns & Marketing Practices of a Large Scale Health Experiment," are available at www.judicialwatch.org.

(FLASHBACK) From the Desk of Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton: Judicial Watch Uncovers Shocking New FDA Documents Related to Gardasil
Those of you who regularly read this column know that Judicial Watch has taken the lead in exposing the ugly truth about the dangerous side effects associated with Gardasil, the vaccination for human papillomavirus (HPV) currently being administered to young girls.

Well this week, we released a special report based on new "adverse event reports" and other information obtained from the FDA under the Freedom of Information Act. These reports document 10 reported deaths since September, 2007. (The total number of death reports is at least 18 and as many as 20.) The FDA also produced 140 "serious" reports (27 of which were categorized as "life threatening"), 10 spontaneous abortions and six cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome - all since January 2008.

(FLASHBACK) Texas governor backs down on HPV vaccine bill; Won't veto legislation to block required cancer shots for sixth-grade girls
AUSTIN, Tex. - Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday said he won't veto a bill that would block state officials from following his order that all sixth-grade girls be vaccinated against a virus that causes cervical cancer.

The Republican governor accused the state legislators of politicizing the debate over his February executive order that required vaccinations against the human papillomavirus vaccine for girls starting in September 2008.

However, he acknowledged the Legislature's overwhelming disdain for his program and said he will allow the bill to become law without his signature.

(FLASHBACK) Hamilton approached by pharmaceutical company representatives, introduces HPV bill
Del. Phillip Hamilton, R-Newport News, has introduced a bill that would add the human papillomavirus vaccine to the list of immunizations needed for school attendance.

Hamilton said pharmaceutical company representatives approached him about submitting the bill, probably because he chairs the House Committee on Health, Welfare and Institutions. Drug companies have been among the largest contributors to Hamilton's election campaigns.

The House panel is scheduled to review HB1914 on Tuesday.

Under Hamilton's bill, the first of the three-dose vaccine series - which protects against a sexually transmitted disease - would need to be taken before girls' entry into middle school.

House speaker seeks investigation of Hamilton's ODU job
In July, Hamilton told The Pilot there was no conflict of interest because he had no discussions with ODU officials about possible employment with the center before he introduced a budget amendment for it.

Yet e-mails show that Hamilton exchanged messages with ODU officials in 2006 and 2007 about obtaining funding for the center and getting a job, even specifying his desired salary. He acknowledged last week that he had made a mistake and said he did not recall sending the e-mails.

Deeds, a state senator from Bath County, said Hamiltons actions betray the public trust and deserve our outrage.

PAM COMMENTARY: Remember the few wacko states that required school girls to get the HPV vaccine as soon as it came on the market, for example Texas? In Texas, the legislature actually reconvened to overturn the governor's executive order on that because it was so controversial. Well, Virginia actually PASSED a law making the HPV vaccine mandatory for school girls. And who introduced that bill? This guy, Hamilton! Now he's in trouble for asking for a job apparently in exchange for getting a school some money, yet back during the HPV debate there were reports that he'd taken money from pharmaceutical companies, and that Merck had actually ASKED him to introduce the controversial HPV vaccine bill. Seems like he needs to concentrate on getting a better job for himself, and stop using his office to solve his personal money problems.

Americans Had to Work from January 1 to August 12 This Year Just to Cover Cost of Government [WRH]
Americans had to work from January 1 until August 12 this year just to cover the cost of government. That is 26 days more than they had to work last year to cover the cost of government.

Cost of Government Day this year fell on Wednesday, August 12, according to Americans for Tax Reform, the conservative group that calculates when the day occurs. Cost of Government Day is the day in the year when the American people have earned enough income to pay the total cost of the spending and regulatory burden imposed by government at the federal, state, and local level.

The August 12 date is 26 days later than Cost of Government Day came last year, when it fell on July 16.

PAM COMMENTARY: I remember a historical study mentioned in one of my college classes years ago, saying that peasants typically have to earn their bread twice before they can eat it -- taxes overall would usually total 50%.

Telescopes to show universe soon after Big Bang
Some of that light is from the first stars to ever form -- fascinating to astronomers because they were probably much larger and brighter than those we find in the present-day universe, Fabricant said.

Closer to home, astronomers hope to see planets orbiting other stars -- perhaps young "Earths" in the process of formation -- and observe other solar systems, he added.

Death toll from hospital bugs hits new high [R]
Data from the Office for National Statistics covering 2004 to 2008 is expected to show record numbers of deaths linked to the superbugs in England and Wales.

Opposition politicians said the Government had allowed "a horrifying death toll" because of its "slow and sloppy" response to spiralling levels of infection in NHS hospitals.

Official data shows a doubling in the death toll linked to MRSA during the period 2004 to 2007, compared with the previous four years, and a quadrupling in deaths linked to C. diff, when two sets of three-year figures are compared.

Between 2004 and 2007 there were more than 20,000 deaths linked to C. diff and more than 6,000 associated with MRSA.

PAM COMMENTARY: This is a story from Britain, not the US, but it demonstrates the danger from just being in hospitals. On his "Dead Doctors Don't Lie" radio show, Dr. Joel Wallach often mentions how hospitals and doctors' offices spread infection, and should be avoided if possible.

Helping Rich White People Kill Poor Brown People (For Money) [WRH]
3) Complicity in torture and the Crimes of Torture Act

The Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (which NZ signed in 1986 and ratified in 1989) makes it very clear that there are absolutely no circumstances under which torture can be justified, even in a state of war or a threat of war, internal political instability or any other public emergency. [10]
Furthermore, it is a criminal offence under the Crimes of Torture Act 1989, which brought the Convention into NZ law, for any public official (which includes armed forces personnel) to aid, abet or conspire with any person to commit an act of torture [11] .
Yet that is apparently what SAS soldiers on previous deployments have done, according to an article recently published in the Sunday Star Times which stated:
International legal experts say New Zealand broke the Geneva Convention and laws against torture when, from 2002, our elite SAS troops transferred 50-70 prisoners to the Americans at the Kandahar detention centre in southern Afghanistan.
The centre was known by US soldiers as Camp Slappy, and prisoners there have described being severely beaten and tortured, drenched with water and left to freeze outside in winter. [12]
The article quotes a Danish special forces operative as saying: We knew the prisoners were not being treated the way they should be treated. We also knew that there were innocent people among them. These two facts also caused concern to the New Zealanders, who were worried their prisoners were being mistreated by the Americans. [13]
Commenting on the Danish governments response to the evidence of severe abuse and torture being perpetrated on prisoners that Danish special forces had delivered into American custody at Kandahar: Copenhagen University law professor Jens Elo Rytter said the Danish government made a political decision to trust the US to treat transferred prisoners well, despite evidence of mistreatment. It appeared New Zealand had followed a similar path, and certainly, to my mind, thats a breach of the Third Geneva Convention as well as the Convention on Torture. [14]

Ultra-tiny 'bees' target tumors
They're called "nanobees," and they're not insects -- they're tiny particles designed to destroy cancer cells by delivering a synthesized version of a toxin called melittin that is found in bees.

"Melittin, which would otherwise result in substantial destruction of your red blood cells and other normal tissues if it were delivered intravenously alone, is completely safe when it's on a nanoparticle," said Dr. Samuel Wickline, director of the Siteman Center of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Nanobees are one of the latest examples of how nanotechnology may change the way diseases are treated.

PAM COMMENTARY: Ill believe it when I see it. Year after year were promised a cancer cure thats just around the corner, and then we never hear anything again. Meanwhile, mainstream medicine does everything it can to attack safe and helpful/effective treatments like the zapper. Things that cure cancer too easily dont make money for the medical-pharmaceutical industry, after all.

Best And Worst Cities To Find A Job: Indeed.com's Rankings [R]
Though the Obama Administration has warned that unemployment will reach 10 percent this year, job markets across the country may not be uniformly bad. According to a new report by the search engine Indeed, the best city to find a job is Washington, D.C., where there are six job postings for every unemployed person. Before you get too excited, Washington, D.C. and Jacksonville, Florida are the only cities on the list in which job postings actually outnumber the unemployed.

Mental Stress Training Is Planned for U.S. Soldiers
PHILADELPHIA The Army plans to require that all 1.1 million of its soldiers take intensive training in emotional resiliency, military officials say.

The training, the first of its kind in the military, is meant to improve performance in combat and head off the mental health problems, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide, that plague about one-fifth of troops returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Active-duty soldiers, reservists and members of the National Guard will receive the training, which will also be available to their family members and to civilian employees.

PAM COMMENTARY: Oh yeah, dont end the war and bring them home LIKE YOU WERE ELECTED TO DO -- just train them to handle being deployed year after year.

Russell Blaylock, MD - What To Do If Force Vaccinated [R]
Dr Blaylock's List of suggestions on How to Reduce the Toxic Effects of the A/H1N1 Vaccine, is as follows. . .

PAM COMMENTARY: Dr. Blaylock is very famous, especially among the alternative health crowd for his great book on excitotoxins.

Personally, Id never take that vaccine. And Id use the same thing for the disease as I would to mop up any live viruses after a vaccine -- a zapper.

12,000 Oklahoma children to be tested with new H1N1 flu vaccine to see any side effects
Because H1N1 flu is a novel virus, parents are concerned as 12,000 children in Oklahoma are going to be tested with vaccinations for H1N1 to see whether there are any serious side effects. Some parents are complaining the only benefit is going to be for the vaccine manufacturers. Other parents say numerous children will die, not from the new vaccine, but from the novel virus that combines avian, swine, and human viruses.

Among the parents' fears are the fear of autism, fear of children becoming paralyzed by novel reactions similar to the syndrome that occured with a different type of swine flu vaccine in 1976. See the Nov. 24, 2004 Journal of the American Medical Association article, Guillain-Barryndrome Following Influenza Vaccination. According to the article's abstract, "An unexplained increase in the risk of Guillain-Barryndrome (GBS) occurred among recipients of the swine influenza vaccine in 1976-1977. Guillain-Barryndrome remains the most frequent neurological condition reported after influenza vaccination to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) since its inception in 1990."

The problem is that the onset of serious side effects could take four weeks or longer to appear. The Journal of the American Medical Association article noted, "From July 1990 through June 2003, VAERS received 501 reports of GBS following influenza vaccination in adults. The median onset interval (13 days) was longer than that of non-GBS reports of adverse events after influenza vaccine (1 day) (P<.001). The annual reporting rate decreased 4-fold from a high of 0.17 per 100 000 vaccinees in 1993-1994 to 0.04 in 2002-2003 (P<.001). A GBS diagnosis was confirmed in 82% of reports. Preceding illness within 4 weeks of vaccination was identified in 24% of reported cases."

PAM COMMENTARY: Testing a new, hastily-developed vaccine on CHILDREN? I already know whats going to happen.

Cooperatives Being Pushed as an Alternative to a Government Plan
But so far, cooperatives have been defined in the health-care debate primarily in terms of what they are not: They would not be run by the government.

That may make the cooperatives more politically palatable to conservatives, as well as to some Democrats such as Conrad, who fear that the public option may be a bridge too far. But it also presents new challenges: Cooperatives would face potentially greater difficulty getting off the ground and obtaining discounted rates from doctors and hospitals, observers say.

"It's very difficult to start up a new insurance company and break into markets where insurers are very established," said Paul B. Ginsburg, president of the Center for Studying Health System Change. "I don't see how they're going to obtain a large enough market share . . . to make a difference."

(FLASHBACK) We sell a bunch of junk, says Whole Foods boss John Mackey
But Mackey told the Wall Street Journal: "Basically, we used to think it was enough just to sell healthy food, but we know it is not enough. We sell all kinds of candy. We sell a bunch of junk."

PAM COMMENTARY: Well, at least hes honest.

Whole Foods faces boycott over chief's health care criticism [WRH/DN]
The chain, which has a flagship store in Kensington, was inundated with complaints from its customers, who are often mocked as latte-sipping, Volvo-driving liberals.

The company issued an apology to its customers, saying Mr Mackeys intent was to express his personal opinions, not those of Whole Food Market.

Sometime called Whole Paycheck for its high prices, the supermarket has recorded sales of $1.8 billion for last quarter, up 2 per cent despite the recession.

Whole Foods quickly responded with an email apology to customers who contacted it.

Johns intent was to express his personal opinions not those of Whole Food Market, it read.

PAM COMMENTARY: Another recent article said that health food industry sales were UP during the current recession, as people sought natural remedies in the absence of employer-provided health insurance coverage. Its too bad that people wait until they lose coverage to educate themselves about healthy lifestyles and alternative medicine.

Although I appreciate Whole Foods stores when I can find them, its true that theyve become expensive, and often look more like regular grocery stores with little organic produce and lots of conventionally grown vegetables. They also carry plenty of packaged foods in bags and boxes, sweets, meat, and fish that often smells awful. I also noticed that one of my favorite stores ripped out its wonderful juice and coffee bar, and rearranged its store to accommodate a huge wine section, apparently trying to compete with Trader Joes emphasis on alcohol. It certainly doesnt look like a traditional health food store with bins of bulk herbs and foods, locally-produced foods and soaps, or that friendly local community atmosphere.

And one criticism I have of health food stores in general, but especially Whole Foods, is that their deli food doesnt taste good. Somehow health food deli sections seem to think that as long as they make the food healthy, taste doesnt matter. Take a look at my book -- healthy food doesnt need to taste nasty. I assume their lack of effort with prepared foods is why I never see the same people at their deli counter twice.

Actor Kiefer Sutherlands Grandfather Tommy Douglas Remembered for Bringing Universal Healthcare System to Canada [DN]
AMY GOODMAN: Dr. Michael Rachlis, finally, the answer to the question that is continually posed by those who oppose any kind of public plan, and that is, having a bureaucrat between the doctor and the patient. Your response to that?

DR. MICHAEL RACHLIS: That there certainly isnt the kind of formal rationing that people have been describing in your country. Or we dont have death panels in this country, for example. That the decision about treatment is made actually just between the doctor and the patient. The insurance plan is virtually never involved. And ironically, in your country, its the private insurers that often stand between patients and physicians.

You have to finance healthcare some way. And then there have to be some decisions made about whats covered and how youre going to organize those services. In our country, we made the choice to have it as a public insurance plan and to make those decisions democratically. And somewhat ironically, in your country, those decisions, theyre left to somebody, but in this case theyre left to private insurers who appear to be a whole lot less accountable than our elected politicians are in this country.

British Politician Tony Benn Condemns Escalation of War in Afghanistan & Defends Britains Socialized Healthcare System [DN]
TONY BENN: Yes, in a way. I mean, some of the doctors were opposed to it, but they all came around. Some of the consultants said, We dont want to be civil servants. But theyre not civil servants. You had a little bit of it.

But Ill tell you what really changed it, and it takes you back to the 1930s. We had mass unemployment, as you did in the United States. And I was a pilot in the Royal Air Force in the war, and we were discussing on a troop ship coming home once how we would deal with the problems of unemployment. And one lad got up, and he said something Ive never forgotten. He said, In the 1930s we had mass unemployment, but we dont have unemployment when were killing Germans. He said, If you can have full employment by killing Germans, why cant you have full employment by building hospitals, building schools, recruiting teachers, recruiting nurses, recruiting doctors? And thats how we got it.

We took the view that a government had a responsibility to focus on the needs of a nation in peacetime in the way in which it does in wartime. And if that principle is followed, then all the ideological language can be set aside. Youve got to judge a country by whether its needs are met and not just by whether some people make a profit. Ive never met Mr. Dow Jones, and Im sure he works very, very hard with his averages. We get them every hour. But I dont think the happiness of a nation is decided by the share values in Wall Street.

AMY GOODMAN: Well, I want to thank you, Tony Benn, very much for being with us, former cabinet minister, longest-serving MP in the history of the Labour Party, also president of the Stop the War Coalition, speaking to us from London.

As we wrap our British segment, before we move on to Canadas healthcare system, by repeating that story that many Britons were surprised to read a recent editorial in the American newspaper Investors Business Daily. The editorial stated, People such as scientist Stephen Hawking wouldnt have a chance in the UK, where the National Health Service would say the life of this brilliant man, because of his physical handicaps, is essentially worthless. Well, Hawking was in fact born in Britain and has lived there his whole life. The newspaper was forced to run a correction. Hawking said, I wouldnt be here today if it were not for the NHS. Thats the National Health Service of Britain.

China mayor sorry after mass poisoning of kids; Parents clashed with cops when tests exposed high lead levels near smelter
CHANGQING, China - A mayor apologized to residents of two villages where nearly all the children were sickened by lead poisoning apparently from a nearby smelter after recent clashes between angry parents and police, state media said Tuesday.

The mayor of Baoji city in Shaanxi province, Dai Zhengshe, arrived at the Dongling Lead and Zinc Smelting Co. plant on Monday when hundreds of villagers were protesting, tearing down fences and blocking traffic outside the factory, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

China's breakneck economic development has left much of its soil, air and waterways dangerously polluted, and environmental showdowns with outraged residents are growing. Authorities routinely pledge to close down polluting industries, but often back down because of their importance to the local economy.

PAM COMMENTARY: Thats why Chinas labor is so cheap -- they havent learned what Americans already knew more than 100 years ago. When you dont regulate those industries, theyll just kill you! They dont care. Notice these folks get an apology for their kids lives being ruined from the MAYOR, not the company that did it to them. Even in China, industry doesnt want to take responsibility for its own liability. And who knows what health problems are down the road for people who arent already sick there.

Ah, the human cost of getting cheap junk at Wal-Mart. . . Im just glad these folks were brave enough to take to the streets! Nothing will change if they dont demand it.

Docs trying to brand healthy eating as a disorder now! [R]
Eating disorder charities are reporting a rise in the number of people suffering from a serious psychological condition characterised by an obsession with healthy eating.

The condition, orthorexia nervosa, affects equal numbers of men and women, but sufferers tend to be aged over 30, middle-class and well-educated.

The condition was named by a Californian doctor, Steven Bratman, in 1997, and is described as a "fixation on righteous eating". Until a few years ago, there were so few sufferers that doctors usually included them under the catch-all label of "Ednos" eating disorders not otherwise recognised. Now, experts say, orthorexics take up such a significant proportion of the Ednos group that they should be treated separately.

"I am definitely seeing significantly more orthorexics than just a few years ago," said Ursula Philpot, chair of the British Dietetic Association's mental health group. "Other eating disorders focus on quantity of food but orthorexics can be overweight or look normal. They are solely concerned with the quality of the food they put in their bodies, refining and restricting their diets according to their personal understanding of which foods are truly 'pure'."

Orthorexics commonly have rigid rules around eating. Refusing to touch sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast, soya, corn and dairy foods is just the start of their diet restrictions. Any foods that have come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or contain artificial additives are also out.

PAM COMMENTARY: Yeah, I wish I had enough self-discipline to be Orthrexic! Whats the cure for this, eating like an average American until youre obese and have diabetes and cancer? Or perhaps he wants us eating fries and burgers every day until we die of a heart attack, or are crippled by a stroke? Or maybe he just wants health nuts to pay him for some extra-expensive therapy?

Notice that sufferers tend to be aged over 30, middle-class and well-educated. Is that because SMART people WANT to eat this way? Actually, humans used to eat this way before artificial pesticides and herbicides were developed, before caffeine became a daily habit, before refined sugar was invented. In other words, its the diet that allowed us to thrive as a species.

A personal note -- I have only one friend who comes close to being this good with her diet -- a vegan who would eat organic whenever possible. Shes elderly now, but youd never think of her as a senior citizen because she doesnt act like one. Shes thin and active, still rides her bike and walks, hasnt had any noticeable deterioration of her mental capacities (in fact I look to her for guidance because shes intelligent on top of her lifelong experience), and is well enough to caretake her elderly husband with his own serious health problems. How many elderly people are well enough to care for an elderly spouse? Some can, but its hard physical work. Good thing shes Orthrexic or she might not have been able to handle it!

Polio Surge In Nigeria After Vaccine Virus Mutates [R]
Polio, the dreaded paralyzing disease stamped out in the industrialized world, is spreading in Nigeria. And health officials say in some cases, it's caused by the vaccine used to fight it. In July, the World Health Organization issued a warning that this vaccine-spread virus might extend beyond Africa. So far, 124 Nigerian children have been paralyzed this year - about twice those afflicted in 2008.

The polio problem is just the latest challenge to global health authorities trying to convince wary citizens that vaccines can save them from dreaded disease. For years, myths have abounded about vaccines - that they were the Western world's plan to sterilize Africans or give them AIDS. The sad polio reality fuels misguided fears and underscores the challenges authorities face using a flawed vaccine.

PAM COMMENTARY: Just because I quote it here or post an article doesnt mean that I agree with all or any of it. With this article, Im only interested in the fact that polio is spreading in Africa, and the vaccines role is admitted.

Concerning the polio vaccine itself, there have been various articles and statistical analyses by doctors showing that hand washing and better hygiene at large were responsible for the decline of polio, and that the vaccine was introduced when the disease was on its way out, and so the vaccine was falsely credited with something that good sanitation did for us. Others have noted that most cases of polio were reclassified as a less serious disease, with only permanent paralysis or blindness qualifying as polio. The rate of that other disease then skyrocketed. (Ill post something on that when I find the study.) Also, many people have introduced evidence that vaccines indeed have introduced AIDS and other diseases to the African population at large, whether accidental or not (more on that as various articles pop up -- for now see Len Horowitz book Emerging Viruses).

I could have linked to another news service that subscribes to AP, but the comments at the end of this Rense article add to the discussion.

Internal Memo Confirms Big Giveaways In White House Deal With Big Pharma [R]
A memo obtained by the Huffington Post confirms that the White House and the pharmaceutical lobby secretly agreed to precisely the sort of wide-ranging deal that both parties have been denying over the past week.

The memo, which according to a knowledgeable health care lobbyist was prepared by a person directly involved in the negotiations, lists exactly what the White House gave up, and what it got in return.

It says the White House agreed to oppose any congressional efforts to use the government's leverage to bargain for lower drug prices or import drugs from Canada -- and also agreed not to pursue Medicare rebates or shift some drugs from Medicare Part B to Medicare Part D, which would cost Big Pharma billions in reduced reimbursements.

In exchange, the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers Association (PhRMA) agreed to cut $80 billion in projected costs to taxpayers and senior citizens over ten years. Or, as the memo says: "Commitment of up to $80 billion, but not more than $80 billion."

Milwaukee mayor is beaten with pipe, lands in hospital
Barrett and his family were returning to their car when they saw an altercation and heard a woman shouting that someone should call 911. Barrett began calling 911 when the suspect who had been attacking the woman, ran toward Barrett and began striking him with a metal pipe.

The suspect, who police said had a criminal arrest record, then fled the scene.

Barrett was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The statement said he was alert and talking when he arrived.

Aung San Suu Kyi's intruder leaves Burma after US senator secures release
Yettaw, who was sentenced to seven years' hard labour at the same hearing, smiled as he left the small plane in Bangkok and flashed "I love you" in sign language to waiting reporters. He did not answer questions and was taken straight to a hospital. The religiously devout self-styled human rights activist reportedly suffers from diabetes, epilepsy and asthma, and was taken to hospital during the trial after suffering seizures.

Webb says the consequences of Yettaw's actions were "regrettable".

"He was trying to help. He's not a mean-spirited human being," the senator told reporters in Thailand.

Yettaw's actions in Myanmar 'regrettable'
An American sentenced to seven years hard labor in Myanmar after he sneaked into the home of detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, arrived in Thailand on Sunday with the U.S. senator who secured his release.

John William Yettaw was taken to hospital in Bangkok shortly after arriving aboard a military aircraft with Sen. Jim Webb.

"I believe what he did was regrettable. I believe it was hurtful to the person that he thought he was trying to help," Webb told reporters in Thailand.

"But at the same time, on humanitarian grounds, I feel fortunate that the government honored my request to allow him to come back here to Thailand with me.

(FLASHBACK) Gardasil HPV Vaccine Hoax Exposed
PAM COMMENTARY: A YouTube video on the same topic as the article linked below this one.

PAM COMMENTARY: Actually, most serious cancer researchers these days think that SV-40 is the only real cancer virus, and those familiar with Rifes work in the 30s think thats the virus he was looking at. There are exceptions in diseases billed as types of cancer, but actually caused by something else -- for example Lymphoma is supposedly caused by the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) -- the same virus that causes mononucleosis. Its thought this is why chemo works much better on Lymphoma than other types of cancer.

Swine flu jab link to killer nerve disease: Leaked letter reveals concern of neurologists over 25 deaths in America [WRH]
A warning that the new swine flu jab is linked to a deadly nerve disease has been sent by the [British] Government to senior neurologists in a confidential letter.

The letter from the Health Protection Agency, the official body that oversees public health, has been leaked to The Mail on Sunday, leading to demands to know why the information has not been given to the public before the vaccination of millions of people, including children, begins.

It tells the neurologists that they must be alert for an increase in a brain disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which could be triggered by the vaccine.

GBS attacks the lining of the nerves, causing paralysis and inability to breathe, and can be fatal.

PAM COMMENTARY: Guillain-Barre is one of the many side effects of the HPV vaccine, marketed to young girls (and made mandatory on the list of school vaccines in the state of Virginia) as fighting cervical cancer. Of course cervical cancer is rare, and it happens later in life, so there arent any real-world statistics showing whether that vaccine has any value in stopping it. (Its actually quite controversial, with one reporter presenting documents he found on the FDAs own web site, admitting that they had no evidence that HPV causes cervical cancer, or that the vaccine works in stopping it.) But the HPV vaccine did kill, paralyze, disable, and cause other harm to many young girls who had been otherwise healthy beforehand. (Ill post more on HPV, and vaccines in general, in the future.) Just one more thing to consider when deciding whether a flu shot is worth it.
