[Photo taken 16 June 2003] Most bison mothers were aware of my presence at the side of the road and had a strategy for protection. I observed them instantly moving their calves accordingly. Some mothers kept their calf either in front of them at all times, or behind them followed up by what looked like an older child. Others moved their calves to the opposite sides of their bodies, protecting them from my view.
